          Menopause represents a critical event in a woman’s life. Rapid loss of oestrogen and of its protective anti-inflammatory effects leads to a series of biological events characterised by a shift from a non-inflamed to an inflammation-prone environment. These changes translate into systemic symptoms, such as joint pain, metabolic syndrome, and others. In women with HCV, menopause has direct effects on the liver, which include faster progression of fibrosis and marked resistance to interferon (IFN)-based antiviral therapy.
