Matias A Avila graduated in Pharmacy/Pharmacology at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, in 1988. He performed his doctoral studies in biochemistry at the Spanish National Research Council (CISC), receiving his PhD in 1992. After a postdoctoral stage at the Lombardi Cancer Center, Georgetown University Washington DC, Matias joined the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain, where he is currently Professor of Biochemistry at the School of Medicine and Director of the Hepatology Program of the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA). Matias served as member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) Governing Board (Scientific Committee) during 2011-14 and was Associate Editor for Gut journal 2011-2019. His research interests include the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the hepatic response to acute injury and regeneration, as well as the genetic mechanisms of chronic liver disesase progression and carcinogenesis, with a basic and translational perspective.
